How to Use a Customer Avatar in Tourism Marketing Strategy

In tourism marketing, a customer avatar is an essential tool that helps tailor your messaging and strategy to connect with your ideal audience. In our previous blog, Tourism Marketing Tips: How to Create a Customer Avatar, we introduced Sam, The Adventure Seeker – a 35-year-old father of two from Sydney with a passion for challenging physical activities, eco-tourism, and remote landscapes.

Let’s use this semi-fictional representation of an ideal customer to build a tourism marketing strategy. The tourism offering is a 4WD family holiday in the Flinders Ranges. So to market this 4WD family holiday to Sam, the Adventure Seeker, we must tailor messaging and marketing strategies based on his needs, motivations, and behaviours.

Here’s how to use customer avatars effectively in your tourism marketing:

Highlight Challenging Yet Family-Friendly Activities

Sam seeks challenging physical activities but also has a family, so the key is to balance adventure with family-friendly experiences. Marketing copy should emphasise the adventure aspects of the 4WD holiday, such as rugged terrain, exciting off-road challenges, and opportunities to explore remote, untouched landscapes. However, details that assure Sam the holiday is also suitable for children should not be overlooked. So, promote family-friendly adventure spots, like beginner-level hikes that kids can handle, and unique educational activities (e.g., wildlife spotting, animal feeding and stargazing).

Example Message:

“Take your family on the ultimate 4WD adventure! Explore hidden gorges and off-the-beaten-path trails while your kids discover the wonders of Australia’s outback. From rugged 4WD challenges to children friendly exploration, our 4WD holiday packages offer something for every family member.”

Promote Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Tourism

Since Sam values eco-tourism, it’s crucial to emphasise the trip’s sustainability aspects. Ensure the 4WD holiday uses eco-friendly practices, such as staying in eco-lodges, minimising waste, and conserving water.

Example Message:

“Embark on a 4WD adventure that leaves a minimal footprint! Our 4WD tours are designed for adventurers who care about preserving nature’s beauty for future generations. Explore pristine, remote locations knowing your family’s holiday supports sustainable tourism practices.”

TIP
Do not greenwash. Make sure you can substantiate your claims.

Offer Convenient and Trustworthy Booking Options

Sam prefers booking through trusted platforms and values convenience. Partner with well-known booking platforms like Airbnb, Expedia, or Booking.com, and display trusted seals and badges (like tourism accreditations) on your website and social media.

Create an easy-to-navigate booking system on your website with precise details, reviews, and a FAQs page to give Sam confidence that everything is taken care of. Offer flexible booking policies (such as free cancellation or rescheduling options), as time is one of Sam’s key pain points.

Example Message:

“Book your family’s 4WD holiday easily through our trusted platform partners or directly with us through our seamless, secure website. With flexible cancellation policies, we take the stress out of planning your adventure.”

Focus on Instagram Marketing and Influencer Collaborations

Since Sam is active on Instagram and follows travel influencers, leveraging Instagram for marketing will be crucial. Post visually engaging images of families on 4WD adventures showcasing stunning landscapes, family bonding moments, and thrilling off-road driving experiences.

Collaborate with influencers that align with Sam’s interests, especially those who focus on adventure travel, eco-tourism, or family travel.

Example Strategy:

Instagram Story Campaign: Create an Instagram story series showing the day-by-day experiences of a family on a 4WD holiday. Showcase challenging but fun adventures like crossing rivers and camping under the stars, along with relaxing moments around the campfire with the kids.
Influencer Takeover: Collaborate with a well-known family adventure travel influencer to take over your account for a day, sharing their experience on a similar 4WD holiday and offering tips for families.

Create Targeted Blog Content

Sam reads travel blogs focused on hiking and 4WD tracks, so use this behaviour to your advantage by creating search optimised blog content tailored to his interests. Blog posts covering detailed guides on the types of 4WD adventures available, eco-friendly travel tips, and family adventure suggestions will work well.

Some possible blog topics:

“Top 5 Family-Friendly 4WD Adventures in Australia”
“How to Plan a Sustainable 4WD Holiday with Kids”
“The Ultimate Outback 4WD Itinerary for Adventurous Families”
You can also share these blog posts on social media and run Google ads targeting users interested in family adventure travel.

Reassure Sam About Safety

Sam is concerned about safety, so address this in your marketing by reassuring him that your 4WD tours prioritise the well-being of the entire family. Mention that your guides are experienced, first-aid trained, and that the vehicles and equipment used are regularly inspected for safety. Include a section on your website specifically for safety FAQs, with clear information on vehicle maintenance, emergency procedures, and precautions taken during the trip.

Example Message:

“Your family’s safety is our top priority. Our experienced guides, well-maintained vehicles, and detailed safety briefings ensure that you and your loved ones can focus on the adventure ahead.”

Leverage Retargeting Ads and Email Marketing

Since Sam books travel 2-3 times per year, retargeting ads can remind him of your offering if he visits your website but doesn’t book immediately. Use Facebook or Google Ads to retarget him with visuals of families enjoying their 4WD adventure in remote landscapes.

Additionally, email marketing can play a significant role in nurturing Sam. Use automated emails to remind him of your tour offerings, provide special family packages, or notify him of limited-time discounts for eco-friendly family tours.

Example Email Campaign:

Subject: “Ready for Your Next Family Adventure? Discover Our Eco-Friendly 4WD Tours!”
Body: “Escape the city and take your family on a thrilling 4WD holiday! Explore remote landscapes while knowing you’re supporting sustainable tourism. Book now for a limited-time family discount!”

Offer Family Packages and Deals

Sam has a family of four, so provide attractive packages with discounts for kids or offer added benefits like complimentary child-friendly gear (e.g., smaller hiking backpacks and kid-sized camping equipment). You could also create themed itineraries like “Family Outback Adventure” or “Eco-Friendly Family 4WD Escape.”

Offer these packages clearly and visually appealingly on your website and social media, ensuring the family experience is a focal point.

Example Package:

“Family 4WD Outback Adventure 5 Days/4 Nights: Explore rugged gorges, camp under the stars, and enjoy guided hikes that suit adults and children. All eco-friendly accommodations and meals included!”

Wrapping it Up

By using the information from Sam’s customer avatar, you can create highly personalised and targeted marketing strategies for your 4WD family holiday offering. Focus on his love for adventure and eco-tourism, address his need for safety and convenience, and use platforms like Instagram and blogs to reach him where he’s most active.

Tailoring your messages to fit Sam’s profile will not only attract him but also ensure that your tourism business stands out as the perfect choice for his next family adventure.
